Street of the European cultures

From July 23 – 24 International festival „The street of Europen cultures” will take place in Valmiera. Different institutions and organizations from several European Union countries will be presented. The aim of the festival is to develop cooperation between different institutions and fields, as well as to engage society in promoting this cooperation.

During the festival on July 23 conference „Cooperation models of cultural organisations and processes of planning th culture policy” will be held in Valmiera Local History Museum. Official delegates will participate to discuss the cooperation between different institutions and spheres – NGO’s, governmental institutions, entrepreneurs, culture and social spheres.

On July 24 different kind of activities from 10.a.m. will be presented for citizens and guests of Valmiera of all ages. The festival will be opened at 11.a.m. on the open air stage in the territory of the castle ruins with an experimental theatre play (musicians and actors from Latvia and Italy).

Presentations about traditions and characteristics of different countries will be showed from 12.30 a.m. till 4 p.m. in the square next to the Hansa wall. There will be a possibility to buy various crafts and homemade food from farmers and craftsmen in the Town Hall Square from 10.a.m. Traditional handicrafts will also be presented.

 

Also the youth non – governmental organizations from Valmiera have prepared an activity called “The circus of Europe”. Everyone will have an opportunity to get to know all 27 European countries by tasting some traditional food, by learning greeting phrases and steps of traditional dances from 1p.m. next to Valmiera Culture centre. A competition with tricky questions also will be offered.

 

The festival will be closed with the French movie night in Valmiera open air stage in castle ruins. There will be a possibility to watch movies by French director Jacques Tati.

 

Those who want to enjoy the art, are welcome to come and see two exhibitions. One in Valmiera Culture centre called “The notes of the journey” by Spanish artists Luis Javier Gayá and Blanca Muñoz de Baena. The second exhibition in Valmiera Local History museum – „Art of tiles (azulejos) in Portugal”.

 

Festival „The street of European culture” is organised by culture and art association of Vidzemes region „Haritas”.The project is supported by European economical area (EEA) and Norway financial instrument, Valmiera city municipality, different culture institutions from Valmiera city, Valmiera State gymnasium, French culture centre and embassies of Spain and Portugal in Latvia.
