An Estonian national exhibition of fashion art will run through 26 July at the Estonian pavilion at the Expo 2010 world's fair in Shanghai, China. The display includes 18 clothing collections and 15 fashion plate photographs from 23 designers.
"Fashion artists dedicate their work to the convictions and aesthetics of their forebears. The exhibition will give visitors a chance to meditate on Estonian identity, on maintaining one's roots and unique qualities in a world of changing and intermingling identities," said fashion artist Anu Hint, the curator of the exhibition and the author of the photographs. "The imagery, colours and patterns employed in Estonian folk art are clearly encoded in the sense of aesthetics of today's artists, showing that the Estonian style that evolved through the centuries still lives on today," said Hint.
The fashion photographs are displayed with unique Estonian handmade rugs from the collections of the Estonian Open Air Museum as a backdrop to stress the parallels between old textiles and modern fashion art.
The exhibition features the work of the following fashion designers and Estonian Academy of Arts fashion department students: Mari Aakre, Katre Arula, Diana Denissova, Anu Hint, Zoja Järg, Aldo Järvsoo, Lilli Jahilo, Xenia Joost, Katrina Kaubi, Monika Kisand, Liivia Leškin, Riina Maitus, Anne Metsis, Astra Mõistlik, Juta Piirlaid, Liis Plato, Piret Puppart, Liisi Riid, Kai Saar, Sille Sarapuu, Külli Kerttu Siplane, Lembe Maria Sihvre and Kristina Viirpalu.
The Expo 2010 fair in Shanghai Expo runs from 1 May to 31 October 2010 and is dedicated to the theme "Better city, better life". Estonian national day will be held on 18 October. The organizer of Estonia's participation at Expo 2010 is Enterprise Estonia.
